One Aussie’s journey to FDL
In a little over a month, we will be setting off to pick up this year’s group of amazing international staff. With that in mind, I thought it would be a wonderful time to share Lady Christine’s reflections on her own decision to spend last summer with us-
In Australia, which is where I am from, there is great hype surrounding the well-known organization Camp America and the opportunities, which they offer. As their name would suggest, they offer the chance to complete a summer abroad working as a camp counselor in the States. It is no secret that Aussies love venturing outside of their comfort zones and seeking adventure, making camp a much sought after experience. So, after I finished my degree in Youth Work, I decided to join the flocks of people taking a chance and flying half way around the world for a summer of in the Land of the Free.
It is here I must tell you that I did not find Fleur de Lis but rather, FDL found me! As I scrolled the web page looking through photos of the amazing grounds, all the activities and the tents and cabins I would be calling home, I was excited by the possibilities. What I didn’t realize at the time was just how much this camp would show me. I thought that camp would be the same old outdoor experience I knew and loved from home and it is.
But it has also been so much more. I have become a part of a community, one that I shared many values, attributes and now memories with. This community promotes the health, wellbeing and empowerment of girls. It encourages their fitness, friendship, imagination, intellect and pursuit of fun. It doesn’t matter what country you have come from or the reasons why you are here, you can’t help but get caught up in being a piece of the FDL puzzle.
So my coming to FDL started for so many of the same reasons as the other Aussies that flock to Camp America but I know that my experience and the memories that I have created here have made it a summer I will never forget and will always cherish. Thanks for the memories FDL!
