The password for today is “And if you don’t know what to make of this, then we will not relate.”
This evening, I had the wonderful occasion to watch a video of our own Lady Hannah Risko perform a terribly camp appropriate song with some of the people she spent this past summer with at Hole in the Wall camp. While I marveled at their immense talent, I was struck by something else- the indictable but massive amount of courage it takes to do such a thing, to get up in front of any amount of people and share something that you are great at and incredibly passionate about. It is a skill I envy, to be perfectly honest.
While I have spent the last 13 years there, I did not grow up at camp, at least not properly. I spent five years as a camper at two different camps and loved them but did not find a home. I did not find a place where I was more certain of the people around me than my own reservations or insecurities. I did not find that moment where my nerves were quieted by my complete faith in the support of everyone else around me.
Over the last thirteen years, I have tried to make my living helping to create this environment for others but tonight, I would just like to acknowledge and celebrate that it exists at all- that there are places in this world where the people around you are able to show you just how amazing you are and let you show them in return, that there are places where the people around you, even if you’ve only known them for a day or two, strive to help you be the best version of yourself possible rather than diminish you. And what makes it even better is that this seemingly mythical place that I am talking about is so easily found under the guise of summer camp. So thank you for that and for all that you make possible by being the people that you are.
