The password for today is Lyle’s wisdom.
When my brother was little, he would point things out to our parents and me by saying “Notice something.” “Notice something”, he would exclaim, as he pointed out a cloud shaped like a dinosaur the fact that someone had broken into the cookies before dessert was served. My parents would hide their bemused smiles behind their hands or a well-placed coffee cup; I teased him about it.
However, my brother, as he often does, had a point that I couldn’t understand at first. There is so much we take for granted in life, so much beauty that goes unnoticed because we are caught up in our own inner monologue. I don’t always fully appreciate the way the tree that line the lake complement the reflection of the sky in the water, and I’ve definitely been done with the first and halfway through my second carnival cookie before pausing to just enjoy how good they taste.
Take a minute to appreciate the hug you are giving and receiving instead of replaying the conversation you just had in your head. Stop and marvel at how sometimes in the morning you can see the moon and the sun sharing the sky at the same time. There is so much to experience. Notice something, notice anything.
