Laurel Leaves: Danny Baker

Writer's picture: SarahCSarahC

"The boat's not working. Should we call Danny?" Anyone who has worked at camp over the last 30 plus years is familiar with this phrase. Danny Baker has always been the Fleur de Lis champion of our motorboats and our ever-patient teacher and coach on how to care for them. And even though it was a conundrum to us and especially to him why we could not consistently keep a boat running throughout the summer, Danny was always ready to lend a helping hand.

Danny was a wonderful neighbor, friend, and supporter of Fleur de Lis Camp. Danny was a member of the club of spouses who marries into Fleur De Lis Camp. He not only married our own Lady Chip Howe Baker, but he physically became camp's neighbor. Together they answered any call regarding borrowing equipment, giving advice about local needs, and opening their home to CTs and staff. Camp often welcomed their spontaneous and always friendly visits on their walks.

Danny died unexpectedly on May 4, 2021. The Bakers have lost a wonderful husband and father and camp too has lost a special member of its family. Always generous with all his gifts and yet exceptionally humble, Danny never wanted any fuss. It is impossible to put to words what he has done for camp over decades, but it seems only appropriate that the boat he helped FdL purchase in 2019 be aptly name "The Danny". You will forever be with us on Laurel Lake.
